Think about it. Many, if not most of the other physical pleasures you enjoy half as much as sex you smile and laugh doing them.
It may be because we have millions of years of evolutionary history with sexuality being closely linked to aggression and dominance - and especially for men, part of that big push to beat out the other guy and get the fittest genes into the next generation.
Another reason more people don't smile or laugh during sex is that desire, by it's very nature has an edge to it. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to tell sometimes if animals are fighting or mating? That's that edge.
Have you ever noticed how many human relationships seem to take on a similar quality? It's hard to tell as an observer if the couple is actually in love or somehow strangely addicted to tormenting each other.
This difference in how we experience sexual pleasure compared to other types of joy may be one reason so many people end up in relationships where the sex is fantastic but everything else is screwed.
Biologist classify all living things throughout the plant and animal kingdoms by their reproductive behavior because, from an evolutionary standpoint, it's the slowest behavior to change.
Laughter, on the other hand, is fairly recent in an evolutionary sense. While several primates smile (although not necessarily from joy), and chimpanzees and gorillas chuckle and tickle - humans are the only species that truly laughs from joy.
It may be that sex is the most fun many people have without laughing because, from an evolutionary standpoint, laughing just hasn't caught up with our reproductive behavior -
